YO! MTV RAPS had their 20th Anniversary show this past week. If you remember YO! MTV RAPS then you're one of the lucky ones! Guest included Run DMC, Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, Slick Rick, LL Cool J, Redman, EPMD, and 2Pac (and EVERY other artist who mattered). Other artists such as Jay-Z, Nas & Wu-Tang we're all introduced on a nation platform via the show. YO! MTV RAPS was the shit and should never have been cancelled in the first place. Then again, Hip-Hop has changed and if this show was still around MTV would fill it with the likes of Yung Joc, Chingy, D4L, and Soulja Boy - not quite the same.
Hosted by Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover, and Doctor Dre, YO! MTV RAPS debuted August 8th 1988. Because of the show, and probably for the first time, everyone from a kid living in a Detroit trailer park to the preppy kid in the Hollywood Hills got an unprecedented look inside Hip-Hop. Rap enthusiasts from around the country and the world were now able to see how their counterparts lived. YO! MTV RAPS took Hip-Hop from the underground to the living rooms of America.
