Treats #60 - Jaylib Live In Los Angeles (2004)

Large ups to StonesThrow for this one. This is a live recording of Jaylib performing in LA back in 2004. I'm throwing this up as a Rap Treat because it's exactly that - a fucking rap treat. I'll let the folks at StonesThrow break it down for you.

"This was recorded at the Henry Fonda Theater, April 4, 2004, on the first night of the Madvillain/Jaylib tour for Madvillainy. Madlib & J. Rocc had performed Jaylib songs live, but this was the first show with J. Dilla, who had just moved to Los Angeles and joined the tour without being announced on the flyers. Another unannounced guest late into the set was Common. The voices you hear are B+ & Melo-D, who recorded this set."

Biggie & J Dilla "Modern Day Gangsters"

So I was hanging out over at OhWord and I seen this video with Dilla and Frank (Frank N’ Dank) telling a few stories. The video is kind of old but it's new to me. The stories include Dilla meeting Q-Tip for the first time, a fist fight in the studio over S950 vs. ASR-10 capabilities, Lil Kim taking Dilla to eat (I assume food), and then something that really grabbed my attention. They speak on a studio session between J Dilla and Biggie. That's right, Dilla and Biggie working together! I heard about that session, but never heard the music from that session. Below is the Dilla/Biggie song. The only catch is I believe the Dilla beat and Biggie verse are from '96, but Busta and Labba's verses were added on years later. Biggie's verse ended up coming out on the Born Again album minus the Dilla production. Either way, I had never heard Biggie rapping on a Dilla beat until now so I figured I'd pass it along. I'm sure to some of you crazed Dilla fanatics this is nothing new. Also, apparently this is another verse where Biggie is goin after Pac (like I said, Biggie's verse was from '96 at the height of their feud). If I'm wrong and this is just a blend somebody please correct me in the comments below, but I'm pretty sure the Biggie/Dilla parts are legit.

Yancey Boys "We Here" Produced by J Dilla

Illa J is the late J Dilla's little brother and they have an album coming out on Delicious Vinyl under the name Yancey Boys. I think it's actually an Illa J album but I like the thought of a J Dilla album better so I'm going to roll with that. The folks at Delicious Vinyl have a bunch of unreleased Dilla beats from a decade ago and the Yancey Boys LP is going to made up of those. This is the first record off the LP.

Dilla Doom "Sniper Elite" (Prod. By J Dilla)

Some unreleased J Dilla for you in the form of a song he produced for a project called Dilla Doom - a collabo between J Dilla and MF Doom. After Dilla's passing the project was shelved/postponed/scrapped. Hopefully the release of this songs means there is a chance Dilla Doom will see the light of day.

J Dilla "Oxtopus"

The story on this song is that it is supposed to be the last song that the late great J Dilla recorded before he passed away. I have no way to verify this but that is the story. Regardless of if that story is legit I do know I've never heard it until now, and any Dilla is good Dilla.

Treats #10 - J Dilla (Unreleased MCA Album)

Another good day. This is the album that Jay Dee did for MCA that never came out. It's called Pay Jay. I remember hearing that he was doing this album but he wasn't going to produce any of it, he was just gonna rap. Looks like that might have been true.

J Dilla "We F'd Up"

Any day that you wake up to a new J Dilla tune is a good day. Today is that day. Jacked from Kanye's blog and produced by Kanye. This beat was originally made for "Big Bro Hov" around the same time as the Blueprint album (as a replacement for "Takeover" because they were having problems clearing The Doors sample). This is my kind of Hip-Hop. This shit is bananas. I miss Jay Dee.
